In 1844 Prince Albert first introduced the British people to Norway spruce as a Christmas tree, and it's still the most common of all Christmas trees. The Norway Spruce is a fast growing (2-3’ per year) evergreen that has dark green needles that are 1 inch long, and can grow up to 5 ft a year in a good weather year. Norway Spruce isn't native to Britain, but it has been grown here since at least the 1500's and it is found everywhere. Picea abies, or Norway Spruce, is a glorious large evergreen tree famous for its use as a privacy screening plant or windbreak. The Norway Spruce tolerates acidic soils well, best in well-drained, sandy soils, large trees transplant easily. From a commercial growers point of view they are an excellent choice due to their speed of growth, disease resistance and colour. The Norway Spruce has fast growth rate when young, slows down with age, fairly dense when young, becoming a bit more open with age. When grown out in the open will take a classic Christmas tree shape, with a broad base of spreading branches close to the ground and a gently tapering shape towards the top.
